Biggest Energy Blunder of Obama Years? Administration Opens New Lands for Mining ›

sustainable-sam:

“….In a move that is likely to go down as one of the largest energy policy blunders of the Obama years, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Tuesday announced that his office was opening the door for 2.35 billion tons of new coal mining operations in Wyoming’s stretch of the Powder River Basin…..”

Landscapes of Extraction: Slide show of landscape scarring for fossil fuels.

Mountaintops leveled. Tar sands scraped and boiled. Water taps aflame. These are just a few of the ways that mankind’s quest for fossil fuels manifests itself, beyond the obvious utility of being able to power a home or business or drive a car.

Stunning (no kidding) short film on the COP15 climate conference in Copenhagen, which I attended in 2009. I’ve never seen a production quite like this, though I’m quite familiar with the anti-capitalistic tropes.

Then, suddenly, at the 7:00 minute mark, the film completely shifts in a compelling way. It calls for a counter-culture-esque revolution where regular folks form coalitions across the Internet, across the globe, to fight back government failures to act on climate change in both the COP15 and COP16. Despite several weaknesses, the argument actually resonates. People can chip out a few minutes from facebook, twittering, tumbling, gawking, FTWinning, etc., and advocate and lobby for government action. The leverage - our vote. REBLOG!

(Great line, by the way, when the narrator proclaims we are, “revolutionary exponents of over-the-counter culture.” Solid. I wish there was a way to add comments to tumblr.)

UPDATE: Production by the talented World Leaders Entertainment. I must be living under a rock, because these visuals are dazzling to me.
