Interesting work by the International Joint Commission, a collaboration between the US and Canada to keep the Great Lakes healthy.

sad to say, above is a picture taken by Jeff Reutter at OSU’s Stone Lab of the algae in Lake Erie. While some algae can be good (food for fish), this cyanobacteria in Lake Erie is NOT. Bad for our health, bad for the ecosystem, bad for tourism, generally disgusting aesthetic etc…

So what to do about all this? Well besides being mindful of the phosphorus that might be in your shampoos or fertilizers (which then gets in our lakes and makes the algae grow), you could attend one of the IJC’s public meetings about the harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie at the end of August and beginning of September, or at least follow the twitter page for solidarity:)
