The USDA updated the Plant Hardiness Zone Maps of the United States. It’s the first update since 1990, and takes into account several new factors, such as new temperature data, climate change, wind speeds, water bodies, and topography. Above are the 1990 and 2012 maps and a few sample states.

The 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which (80 million) gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.
