Nice promo by Gideon Rose of Foreign Affairs Magazine. So good, I just subscribed!
I really like the idea of editors, staff, and CEOs openly talking about their products. Tumblr is excellent at this, allowing their employees wide berth to do what they like. Apple, on the other hand, is the North Korea of computer products - an unsustainable business model (I can see the headlines after Apple’s collapse “Apple’s epic implosion: Why didn’t we see the obvious coming?”). NPR is sort-a-kinda good at this sort of social media PR, though they fired a few of their employees in 2011 for expressing their personal political opinions, which just seems very 1940s style journalism to me. Anyway, glad to see Foreign Affairs reaching out while not diluting their brand.
Foreign Affairs Editor Gideon Rose offers a behind the scenes look at the new issue, which celebrates the magazine’s 90-year anniversary. He and his staff picked material from the Foreign Affairs archives to trace the ideological battles of the past century and the evolution of the postwar order. He argues that this order solved the central challenge of modernity and that today’s political, economic, and social conflicts do not fundamentally threaten it.
