Climate Adaptation
by Michael Cote
I want to punch climate change in the face.
I'm an environmental consultant into climate adaptation, land-use law, and urban planning. For "fun," I research, publish, and lecture on how cities can adapt to climate change. Check out my latest writing at GOOD.is. I've published in the Int'l Journal of Climate Change, Berkeley Planning Journal, The New Planner, etc. I currently consult for the Association of Climate Change Officers (this tumblr is not affiliated).
What is "Climate Adaptation"? Adaptation is not about carbon emissions or greenhouse gases. In that respect, it's less Al Gore and more Bob the Builder. It's how managers lower risks from environmental impacts caused by climate change. Things like building levees to protect homes from floods; managing forests to prevent droughts; building smarter, stronger infrastructure; and preparing public health officials for increased rates of pests and diseases. These things are managed by smart people. I help them understand how climate will affect their fields so they make better decisions.
